The State of UK Debt Collection Digital 2026

We put the public websites of 153 UK debt collection agencies through Google’s own mobile testing tool, the way a prospective borrower on a phone meets them: how fast the page loads, whether the firm can measure anything, how accessible the site is, and how easily it is found. Public information only, collected October 2026; 139 returned complete results. Free to cite with attribution to Credit Canary.

The whole sector, one chart

Only 7 of 139 debt collection agencies clear Google’s “good” bar for mobile speed

Every debt collection agency we assessed, placed by its Google mobile speed score. The band a site needs to reach is on the right. The median sits at 63.

What we found

87%

Mobile speed is the sector’s biggest gap

On Google’s mobile test, 87% of debt collection agencies took more than four seconds to render their main content, and the median mobile speed score was just 63 out of 100. Only 7 reached the good band, and 14% sat in the red. This is where a borrower on a phone decides whether to stay.

47% / 57%

Measurement is uneven

47% run no web analytics we could observe, and 57% have no modern GA4. 67% show no cookie-consent tool. Without measurement a lender cannot tell which channels bring borrowers or where applicants give up. (We only see tags that load without a consent click, so the true figure for the largest firms may be a little better.)

82/100

Findability is a relative strength

The median findability score was 82 out of 100 and only 34% lacked a useful meta description. The problem is rarely being found. It is what happens once a visitor arrives on a slow page.

52%

Accessibility has room to run

The median automated accessibility score was 89 out of 100, but 52% scored below 90, where common barriers start to lock people out. Accessibility is a duty under the Equality Act, and automated checks catch only a third to a half of real issues.

14 of 153

Some sites would not load for Google’s tool

14 of the 153 firms could not be loaded reliably by Google’s testing tool. Usually this points to aggressive bot-blocking rather than a site that is down, but the same defences can trip up legitimate services and some assistive technology.

Method and citation

All figures come from Credit Canary’s audit of 153 UK debt collection agencies with a live website, using public information only: each homepage was assessed with Google PageSpeed Insights on a mobile profile. Collected October 2026; 139 returned complete results and 14 could not be loaded reliably. This is passive analysis of what each site already shows every visitor. Speed uses Google’s simulated mid-tier phone on a throttled connection, a fair comparison between firms rather than an absolute load time. These are a prioritisation guide, not a verdict on any individual firm.
